Colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, pelvic inflammatory diseases are some of the risk factors which trigger the development of an anal abscess. Pathophysiology Anal abscesses are caused by plugging of the anal ducts. Anal ducts are those which drain the anal glands in the anal wall and this helps the easy passage of fecal matter through mucus secretion. Its blockage causes fluid stasis which finally leads to infection. Diagnosis The diagnosis of an anal abscess is by doing a physical examination of the anal region. Check for pain, swelling, and redness in the anal region. Additional tests may be carried out to screen sexually transmitted diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, or rectal cancer. Treatments Surgery is the standard treatment for anal abscesses. The superficial abscess can be drained using local anesthesia. For deeper abscess may need hospitalization and surgery. Antibiotics are used to prevent infection. Anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs are also used if needed. Prognosis Surgical treatment is usually successful in all types of anal abscesses.
