Barrett’s esophagus is a complication of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Which, stomach acid frequently irritates the lining of esophagus leading to heartburn and damage to the tissue of esophagus.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BARRETT’S ESOPHAGUS
CAUSES OF BARRETT’S ESOPHAGUS
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF BARRETT’S ESOPHAGUS The above-mentioned causes result in stomach acid backing up into the esophagus and irritating the epithelial lining in the esophagus. The irritation feels like burning pain in the chest. Acid reflux happens when the lower esophageal sphincter doesn’t tighten or close properly. This causes digestive juices from the stomach to rise into the esophagus and leads to damage to the lining of esophagus. DIAGNOSIS OF BARRETT’S ESOPHAGUS

Via https://www.ayurvedaforall.co.uk/blog/ayurvedic-treatment/ Puffy eyes or bags under the eyes are both a health and cosmetic issue. It affects the person’s health as well as looks. While ladies seem more concerned about such altered looks, puffy eyes and dark circles around eyes are observed more in females due to their delicate skin and structures under the skin around the eyes. In some cases, dark eyes or puffy eyes are temporary and they get rid of their own. In such people, the condition may be caused by a temporary pathology like an allergy or sleep deprivation. But in some cases, the condition is long lasting and continues despite any treatments. There are many home remedies that claim to be removing the bags under eyes, but a complete cure will be possible only when the cause of the condition no longer exists. Causes of Bags under eyes
Treatment of Bags under eyes Treatment depends upon what is causing puffy eyes. In severe conditions like renal disease, puffiness and oedema will be seen around the eye also. There will be other signs and symptoms and a proper evaluation and diagnosis should be made in such cases. In puffy eyes without any other complications or underlying condition, the following measures may help.
Preventive measures
Ayurvedic Concept of Bags under eyes Eyes are considered very important by the sages of Ayurveda. They placed an entire section of classical texts to explain diseases of eyes. Puffy eyes can be called as netrakootasotha in Ayurveda. As per our knowledge, sotha means swelling in Sanskrit and netrakoota means eye & surrounding area. Sotha or swelling is enumerated as a disease of Kapha dosha imbalance. In most cases, the circulation of body fluids will be obstructed in minute channels & extracellular space around the area. Due to the blocked channels, Vaata also will be vitiated. Ayurveda explains eyes as the normal site of Pitta dosha & vision as one among its normal functions. As Pitta is hot & Kapha is cold by quality, both of them act opposite to each other. So, eyes should always be saved from aggravated Kapha. That is why daily and weekly application of Anjana (medicated kajal or collyrium is advised. Adding this procedure to your daily routine will help you prevent many eye disorders and puffy eyes. Ayurvedic Nidana of Bags under eyes
Ayurvedic treatment for Bags under eyes
Measures to reduce puffy eyes are mostly herbs & therapies that alleviate the aggravated Kapha-vata doshas. Both internal medicines and external applications are advised in this condition. Medicines used for puffy eyes include: Abhayarishtam Amrutarishtam Avipathy churnam Haridrakhandam Agastyarasayanam
Herbal Preparations for Bags under eyes
Local application Virgin coconut oil Castor oil Almond oil Herbal paste of billwa leaves (aegle marmelos) Sandalwood paste Cowdung ash Pure organic aloe vera pulp Netradhara (therapeutic washing of the eye with herbal formulations) Thripahala kwatha Lodhradi kwatha Yashtimadhu kwatha Daruharidra kwatha Anjana(collyrium) Sauveeranjanam Ilaneer kuzhambu Thalam(application of herbal combinations on vertex) Rasnadi choornam Kachooradi choornam Ksheerabala tailam

The post Ayurvedic Treatment for Bags under Eyes appeared first on Ayurvedaforall UK Blog. Via https://www.ayurvedaforall.co.uk/blog/ayurvedic-treatment-bags-eyes/ Whatever be the age, gender or race, injuries are a part of human life and development. Bone fractures and injury to the internal organs are considered as emergency situations which can be fatal or disabling for the lifetime. But there are less serious injuries which may go unnoticed at the time of trauma but can be severe and disabling as the time goes by. There are many examples like sprain, a hairline fracture or a stress fracture etc. These will not cause immediate & serious signs like unbearable pain, discolouration or huge swelling like in the fractured bones. But if not diagnosed, managed & immobilised in a proper way, these can cause serious health problems of locomotor system in the long run. A sprain is a stretching or tearing of ligaments — the tough bands of fibrous tissue that connect two bones together in the joints. The most common location for a sprain is in the ankle. Signs and symptoms
Causes Physical injuries or trauma.
Pathophysiology
The lateral ankle complex, which is composed of the anterior talofibular, calcaneofibular, and posterior talofibular ligaments, is the most commonly injured site. Approximately 85% of such sprains are inversion sprains of the lateral ligaments, 5% are eversion sprains of the deltoid or medial ligament, and 10% are syndesmotic injuries. The ATFL is the most likely component of the lateral ankle complex to be injured in a lateral ankle sprain. Osteochondral or chondral injuries of the talar dome should be considered when diagnosing an ankle injury. During forced dorsiflexion, the PTFL can rupture. With forced internal rotation, ATFL rupture is followed by injury to the PTFL. Extreme external rotation disrupts the deep deltoid ligament on the medial side, and adduction in neutral and dorsiflexed positions can disrupt the CFL. In plantarflexion, the ATFL can be injured. Via https://www.ayurvedaforall.co.uk/blog/sprain-ayurvedic-treatment-diet-exercises-research-papers-yoga-pranayama/ Speech is the prominent way of communication among humans. It needs proper training from childhood to listen understand and speak. Speaking skills are modified through many adaptive changes by generations. It needs a gradual & steady development of structures associated with speech from the foetus. F After birth, in childhood the language is grasped from the surrounding people as a part of growing up. Both physical and emotional factors play a role in the proper functioning of organs of speech. Any abnormality in any of these can lead to various kinds of speech disorders. Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is a chronic voice disorder, that is characterized by excessive or inappropriate contraction of laryngeal muscles during speech.
Signs and symptoms
Speech is characterized by strained or strangled phonation with intermittent voice offsets on voicing of vowels. Patients report that symptoms are worse when they are under emotional stress, when they talk on the telephone, or when they speak in public. The symptoms are often better upon awakening in the morning or after a drink of alcohol. Abductor spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is rarer than the adductor type (17% of all patients with spasmodic dysphonia). Patients have prolonged voiceless consonants because of difficulties with voice onset following voiceless sounds such as /h/, /s/, /f/, /p/, /t/, and /k/. Additional symptoms in some patients with abductor spasmodic dysphonia (SD) include pitch changes, phonatory breaks during vowels, uncontrolled rises in vowels’ fundamental frequency, or a breathy voice quality. Causes Genetic disorder which has been attributed to a defect on bands 9q32-34.
Pathophysiology
Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is currently understood to be a focal dystonia that affects laryngeal muscle control during speech. Dystonia refers to a syndrome of sustained muscle contractions. Focal dystonias involve abnormal activity in only a few muscles. Dystonic movements are aggravated or become manifest during voluntary movement and worsen with fatigue or physical and emotional stress. Dystonia may be focal, segmental, multifocal, or generalized. Although spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is considered a focal dystonia, it may present as a segmental or multifocal dystonia. Diagnosis
Videolaryngostroboscopy Neurologic examination Perceptual analysis Acoustic analysis Aerodynamic analysis Electromyographic analysis Subjective evaluation by patient Treatments
Injection of very small doses of botulinum toxin into laryngeal muscles
Prognosis With the exception of dysphonia caused by stroke for which there can be marked improvement, dysphonia from other causes is stable or progressive, and the prognosis depends on the underlying cause, its tendency to progress, the availability of therapy, and the response to therapy. Complications Malnutrition Aspiration pneumonia Choking Disease & Ayurveda Voice disorders are mentioned as swarasaada or swarabheda in Ayurveda. Considering the clinical manifestations, spasmodic dysphonia can be compared with medoja swarasaada. Nidana Rajayakshma Purvaaroopa Not mentioned Samprapti Due to causative factors, the doshas get vitiated in the rajayakshma patient, travel in the body, get lodged in the throat(kantha) and produce the disease. The post Spasmodic Dysphonia- Ayurvedic Treatment, Diet, Exercises, Research Papers, Yoga & Pranayama appeared first on Ayurvedaforall UK Blog. Via https://www.ayurvedaforall.co.uk/blog/ayurvedic-treatment-diet-exercises-research-papers-yoga-pranayama-6/ Slow digestion or Gastroparesis is a condition in which food stays in the stomach for longer than it should. It may also be called delayed gastric emptying. Peristalsis is the normal movement of muscles of GIT, mainly stomach & intestine which helps in the movement of food bolus from mouth downwards to the rectum while digestion & absorption occur. Speed of peristalsis should be rhythmic & normal for proper absorption & assimilation. Digestion will be disturbed when the movement of the intestines are very slow. This may lead to chronic malnutrition, deficiency disorders and other complications. Water and electrolyte balance also get impaired in such a condition. Medications and lifestyle changes are needed to manage the disease.
Signs and symptoms
Causes Diabetes Injury to vagus nerve, mostly from surgery Hypothyroidism Gastroenteritis Medications such as narcotics and some antidepressants Parkinson’s disease Multiple sclerosis Rare conditions such as amyloidosis and scleroderma
Pathophysiology The pathogenesis of primary intestinal motility disorders probably is multifactorial, but neither biochemical abnormality nor structural abnormality has been demonstrated commonly, except in some forms of intestinal pseudo-obstruction. More recently, there is evidence that low-grade mucosal inflammation and immune activation (particularly with mast cell involvement) in association with impaired epithelial barrier function and aberrant neuronal sensitivity may play a role in functional GI disorders.
Diagnosis Clinical examination Blood tests Barium X-Ray Gastric scintigraphy 13C-GEBTs Gastric manometry Electrogastrography Ultrasound Upper endoscopy
Treatments
Treatment highly depends upon the cause. Changes in diet and habits Eating six small meals each day rather than three larger ones. Have more liquids and low-residue foods, Drink plenty of water and fluids like broths, soups, juices, and sports drinks. Avoid high-fat foods, which can slow digestion, and high-fibre foods, which are harder to digest. Make sure to take nutritious, yet light & easy to digest food items Try walking after eating a main course. Do not lie down immediately after taking food. Medications Medicines like Metoclopramide, Erythromycin and antiemetics can help improve the situation for a while. It is not recommended to take long term medications which cause remarkable adverse reactions. Other treatments Botox injections to relax the valve, keeping it open for longer sothat the stomach can empty. Electrical stimulation uses electrodes attached to the stomach wall to trigger stomach contractions. In a procedure called per-oral pyloromyotomy (POP), an endoscope is used to cut the pylorus valve so it’s easier for the stomach to empty. Patients with obesity and diabetes can have gastric bypass surgery. A small pouch is created from the top part of the stomach and attaches it to the lower end of the small intestine. This limits the quantity of food the patient can eat. In severe cases, intravenous nutrition or parenteral nutrition will be needed in which nutrients go straight into the bloodstream through a catheter in a vein. Prognosis Primary intestinal motility disorders which are not associated with malignancy or debilitating pathology have a good prognosis.
Complications Dehydration Malnourishment Deficiency disorders Formation of bezoars and obstruction in GIT Disease & Ayurveda Ajeerna Nidana
Intake of excess food or food which is not familiar or with different/opposite potency Intake of food before the previously had meals get digested Untimely food intake Heavy, cold and heavy foods Drinking large quantity of cold water Day sleep and keeping awake at night Suppression of natural urges Other chronic systemic diseases Emotions like envy, anxiety and anger Food intake with worry, fear, anger, jealousy Stress Grief Food and habits causing vitiation of Kapha Purvaaroopa Not mentioned Samprapti When the causative factors vitiate kapha, it gets smeared on the walls of intestines and all channels into and out of it gets obstructed. This causes a loss in the digestive fire. Proper digestion and absorption will not happen in this case. Due to this weakened Agni, undigested and partially digested food retained in the stomach and is called Ama. It contains many toxic produscts to the body and entering into the channels & circulatory system, Ama causes many diseases. This is why Loss of appetite (Agnimaandya) is considered as the root cause of all the diseases in Ayurveda. Lakshana Indigestion Decreased appetite Loss of taste & salivation Sour belching/heartburn Heaviness and distension of abdomen General malaise Headache Giddiness/fainting Stiffness in the back/hip Yawning Body aches Fever Vomiting Divisions Ama Vidagdha Vishtabdha Rasasesha Prognosis Sukhasadhya Chikithsa The Ayurveda treatment of Ajeerna is normalising the Agni. It is done by two steps. One is to remove any Aama (mixture of digested and undigested food particles in stomach which turns toxic to the body) or obstruction in the channels. The next step is to enhance the Agni (digestive fire) and bring it into normal. Samana Upavasam Langhanam Aamapachana oushadhas Agnideepana oushadhas
Sodhana Sodhana therapies other than Sadyovamana (Therapeutic vomiting) are not indicated in a person with Loss of appetite/indigestion in the initial stage. Once the undigested food is cleared and the person is devoid of Ama, medicines and procedures to improve the Agni can be administered. The panachakarma therapies include: Vamanam Virechanam Asthapanavasti Anuvasanavasti Sneha-sweada

Via https://www.ayurvedaforall.co.uk/blog/slow-digestion-ayurvedic-treatment-diet-exercises-research-papers-yoga-pranayama/ Herpes zoster (HZ) infection, commonly called shingles, is the reactivation of a latent varicella zoster virus (VZV) that caused an earlier episode of chicken pox. It is actually a complication of herpes infection. A few of the infected people are affected with this complication. As it is a severe and painful condition, most of the cases are managed as emergency. It is an infection of a nerve and the skin around the area of nerve course. It is characterised by pain or a tingling sensation, in a limited area on the side of the face or torso, followed by a red rash with blisters. The fluid filled blisters spread fast and are extremely painful. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS Unilateral, fluid-filled blisters with severe pain and burning sensation. Sometimes itching is present. The rash usually follows the course of the affected nerve. CAUSES It occurs over the dermatome innervated by the ganglion, where the virus(Varicella zoster) resides for life until stress, immunosuppression, or some other condition allows it to travel to the skin served by the affected nerve. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY Varicella-zoster virus is a highly contagious DNA virus. Varicella represents the primary infection in the nonimmune or incompletely immune person. During the primary infection, the virus gains entry into the sensory dorsal root ganglia. How the virus enters the sensory dorsal root ganglia and whether it resides in neurons or supporting cells are not completely understood. The varicella-zoster virus genome has been identified in the trigeminal ganglia of nearly all seropositive patients. The virus remains latent for decades because of varicella-zoster virus–specific cell-mediated immunity acquired during the primary infection, as well as endogenous and exogenous boosting of the immune system periodically throughout life. Reactivation of the virus occurs following a decrease in virus-specific cell-mediated immunity. The reactivated virus travels down the sensory nerve and is the cause for the dermatomal distribution of pain and skin lesions. DIAGNOSIS Clinical evaluation on the basis of the characteristic appearance of the rash. TREATMENTS A live, attenuated vaccine aimed at boosting immunity to Varicella zoster virus and reducing the risk of Herpes Zoster. The vaccine has been shown to reduce significantly the incidence of both HZ and Post Herpetic Neuralgia. PROGNOSIS Early recognition and treatment can reduce acute symptoms and may also reduce Postherpetic Neuralgia. COMPLICATIONS Serious nerve pain, called post herpetic neuralgia Disease & Ayurveda Baahyavisarpa Nidana Not mentioned separately. Research articles A randomized, placebo-controlled, phase 3 study in 18 countries to evaluate the efficacy and safety of HZ/su in older adults (≥50 years of age), stratified according to age group (50 to 59, 60 to 69, and ≥70 years) was conducted. The HZ/su vaccine significantly reduced the risk of herpes zoster in adults who were 50 years of age or older. In a clinical study, among adults who had undergone autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation-HSCT, a 2-dose course of recombinant zoster vaccine compared with placebo significantly reduced the incidence of herpes zoster over a median follow-up of 21 months.

Via https://www.ayurvedaforall.co.uk/blog/shingles-ayurvedic-treatment-diet-exercises-research-papers-yoga-pranayama/ It is the most common irritating disease of the scalp, yet it can spread to face, back, neck and chest. Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common skin condition seen frequently in clinical practice. Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic relapsing erythematous scaly skin disease, the prevalence of which is around 1 to 3% of the general population in the United States. It has two incidence peaks, the first in the first three months of life and the second beginning at puberty and reaching its apex at 40 to 60 years of age. Still, it affects most of the people once in a while regardless of gender, age or race. Both genetic factors and environmental factors play roles in this disease. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS Reddish skin rashes with scaling, erythema, and itching-occur most often on the scalp, face, chest, back, axilla, and groin. CAUSES Infection by Malassezia yeast. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY The currently accepted theory on the pathogenesis of this disease advocates that yeast of Malassezia spp., present on the skin surface of susceptible individuals, leads to a non-immunogenic irritation due to the production of unsaturated fatty acids deposited on the skin surface. DIAGNOSIS Clinical evaluation TREATMENTS Antifungal agents such as topical ketoconazole is the mainstay of therapy for seborrheic dermatitis of the face and body. Because of possible adverse effects, anti-inflammatory agents such as topical corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors should be used only for short durations. Several over-the-counter shampoos are available for treatment of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. Antifungal shampoos (long-term) and topical corticosteroids (short-term) can be used as second-line agents for treatment of scalp seborrheic dermatitis. PROGNOSIS treatment almost always results in an excellent response, however there is high chance of recurrence. COMPLICATIONS secondary bacterial infections Erythroderma Disease & Ayurveda Darunaka/Daranaka Nidana Unwholesome diet with opposite potency Improper hygiene Causes for vitiation of the kapha dosha and Vaata dosha Purvaaroopa Not mentioned Samprapti Due to the causative factors, vitiated doshas (mainly kapha) vitiate rasadhatu and reaches skin of the scalp and develop into scaly rashes with itching and other discomforts. Lakshana Itching of the scalp Hair fall Dry and cracked skin of the scalp Divisions Not mentioned Prognosis Saadhya in most cases Yaapya in chronic & complicated cases Chikithsa Main treatment of darunaka is bloodletting (siravedha) in head. It is done by making minute cuts on the skin of scalp and letting out the vitiated blood. By this method, the aavarana (obstruction causing lack of supply & malnourishment to the skin & hair roots) is removed and the skin of the scalp is cleaned leading to proper hair growth.
