Yamaka is a type of sneha kalpana. Sneha kalpana is that which is prepared with any of the four snehas (oleaginous substances) – ghrta, taila, vasa, and majja – as the base, by subjecting to a specific heating pattern with kalka and kwatha/drava dravya. Through this process, the active therapeutic properties of the medicines are assimilated into the sneha dravya. Usually, only one among the sneha dravyas, ie either one of ghrta, taila, vasa, and majja, is used as the base. Yamaka kalpana is unique in that it has a mixture of ghrta and taila as the base. INDICATIONS Kushta (skin disorders) in Ayurveda is divided into two types – Maha kushta and Kshudra kushta. According to Ashtangahrdayam Jivantyadi yamaka is to be used in vata-kapha predominant kshudra kushtas.
A point to be noted is that the external therapies in kushta is advised when the doshas are only pertaining to the twak (skin). If the internal doshadushti is not corrected, the condition will aggravate. INGREDIENTS
METHOD OF PREPARATION Ingredients 1 to 5 are made into kalka (paste) and is boiled in the mixture of ghrta and taila along with water. Once it attains the khara paka (complete evaporation of the water content), it is taken out of the flame, and powders of ingredients 6,7,8 are added and mixed well. USAGE
